Garage Door Spring & Cable Replacement

The springs do the heavy lifting, not the motor. When one breaks, the door suddenly weighs as much as it really does, often 70 to 120 kg for a double sectional. Spring and cable work is dangerous without the right tools, so please leave it to us.

How you'll know a spring or cable has gone

  • A loud bang from the garage, often at night when the temperature drops.
  • The door opens a few centimetres and stops, or the motor strains.
  • A visible gap in the coiled spring above the door.
  • A cable hanging loose, or the door sitting crooked.

Why springs fail

Every spring is rated for a set number of open-and-close cycles. A busy family garage can use up a standard spring in seven to ten years. On the coast, rust on the coils speeds this up, because corrosion creates weak points where the spring snaps. We fit springs matched to the actual weight of your door, and we can fit longer-life springs if the garage is your main entry.

Replace in pairs

On doors with two torsion springs, we recommend replacing both. They've done the same number of cycles, so the second one is usually close behind. We always replace frayed cables at the same time, and finish by re-balancing the door so it holds steady halfway open on its own.

Please don't adjust springs yourself. Torsion springs are wound under very high tension and can cause serious injury. Keep the door still and call us.

Springs & Cables: common questions

Can I open my garage door with a broken spring?

We don't recommend it. Without the spring the door is very heavy and can drop. Keep it still and call us; we'll free the car once the door is safe.

Should both springs be replaced at once?

Yes, on two-spring doors. Both have done the same number of cycles, and replacing them together keeps the door balanced.

Do roller doors have springs?

Yes. Roller doors use a spring inside the drum. If the door has become heavy or won't stay up, it may need re-tensioning.
